Invisible Dog Fences - Facts and Advantages, is an Invisible Dog Fence Right For Your Home?

Invisible dog fences are a relatively new technology for containing dogs within an area. These invisible dog fences are electronic containment systems designed to teach pets their boundaries while in your yard. Invisible dog fences use a small "shock" which is transmitted through an electronic collar attached to the animal. This article will explain to you how such dog containment systems work and to help you make an informed choice on whether or not to employ such a device for your home.

How Do Underground Electronic Dog Fences Work?

Invisible Set

As your pet comes closer the fenced area, a warning tone will emit from his or her collar. If he or she does not get further away from the area within two seconds, the tone will the be followed by a mild electrical shock, transmitted through a device connected to his collar. The shock is essentially harmless and does not cause pain to the dog, but rather a slight annoyance. However, if your dog ignores this shock or does not have any effect, a setting may be tweaked so that the strength of the shock is suitable for the dog not to cross the barrier.

Advantages Of Invisible Dog Fences

One advantage of having an invisible dog fence is that you won't have to resort to chains, leashes and cages which restrict your dogs freedom. With this underground fences, they are allowed an open area and freedom which they would not have if confined in a cage, this can be beneficial for a dogs development and growth in terms of behavior.

Invisible dog fences are easily installed and also act as a training tool for your animal. A dog will quickly learn its boundaries and perhaps learn not to cross them. Dogs will no longer wander into the neighbor's yard nor will try to chase the mailman has he delivers the mail!

Physical fences such as wires and wooden fences can also be an eyesore and destroy the beauty of your garden or home. Besides that dogs can dig under them or simply jump over them. Physical fences also deteriorate over time adding to maintenance costs. With an invisible dog fence, you can protect sensitive areas of your garden, while keeping it aesthetically pleasing.

Would You Rather Fly Or Be Invisible?

Recently one of my son's favorite TV stations conducted a survey of children. They asked kids which superpower they would rather have: the ability to fly or to be invisible?

To me it seemed to be a no-brainer--to fly most definitely!

Invisible Set

First of all, I think the ability to fly offers a lot more opportunity for fun, adventure, and freedom. Just think about being able to go anywhere, anytime you want, without worrying about traffic, road conditions, or gas money!

While being invisible offers a range of opportunities as well it just seems so sneaky to me that I feel uncomfortable even thinking about it.

My son agreed with me. He thought flying would be a lot more fun. No surpise there as he is a physical child who enjoys being on the go.

Then I really started to think about the question. What does our choice say about us? I think I would really want to know why a child would choose invisibility over flying. I would fear that a child who chose that option either already felt invisible or wished they were. I would worry about their self-esteem and security in social interactions.

Of course, on the other hand, there are certain practical considerations. There are a number of instances where invisibility could serve many purposes for good on a small or large scale.

Apparently this question has been around for some time. A public radio station did a program on superheroes some time ago and took a survey asking which power their audience would prefer, the power to fly or to be invisible.

Men overall, voted that they wanted to fly and women that they wanted to be invisible. Why? So that the men could fly their kids to school and soccer instead of fighting traffic and women wanted to be invisible so that they could sit in on conversations and hear what was being said about them. No one wanted to use the super power to help others.

I find that survey even more disappointing than the one for kids. But not surprising. I am not a cynical person (except when it comes to my students' excuses for not doing their homework) in general but more often when I hear some act of courageous good I am surprised rather than affirmed.

So while this could certainly appear to be a superficial question, something like the Barbara Walter's "If you could be an animal, what would you be" type, but I think it could lead to a much deeper discussion. What do you think?

Which would you rather be? Which superpower would you rather your child have?

Being Invisible With an IP Changer

It's common for people to think that what they do on the Internet is something only known to them. Sometimes, they browse sites with a feeling of secrecy and they actually believe nobody else in the world knows they've been frequenting certain domains. Though one might be surfing in his own bedroom with nobody around, everyone else who's connected is very much aware. Anything and everything a surfer does is, therefore, far from secret and if there's any reason to that, it's the very structure of the Internet that is responsible.

With one's IP address, one will be identified by the rest of the online community. You may have heard this term over and over but never understood it. IP stands for Internet Protocol and each computer that is allowed access to the Internet by a service provider is assigned an IP address. This IP address is a set of of numbers divided into four parts. The first set identifies your domain, the second, your subnet, the third, your network and the last and most crucial, the computer you're using. When you take all these groups of numbers as one, they will compose an IP address which will belong to anyone who participates in any form of Internet activity.

Invisible Set

Each time you're online, your IP address is made available on the world wide web and each time this happens, you are making yourself available for online communities that may have interest in you somehow - a company marketing through emails, a people search site that seeks out your personal information to store in its database or simply a crazed geek who randomly desires to wreak havoc in your computer by throwing in viruses. Originally, the concept of the Internet was to include a system that allowed users to be tracked for possibly engaging in illegal online activities. IP addresses were supposed provide this security while surfing. While it used to a very complicated process to do this, today, anyone can track anyone and even for free. And probably for this reason, it has been abused.

A lot of people have since been concerned about their IP address and online safety. A frequent question asked is, can I hide my IP address? Fortunately, yes, there are ways for your computer not to be identified or tracked while connected to the Internet simply by masking your IP. Software varieties have been created to do this job by allowing you to surf the net behind a number of fake IP addresses. This way, there's practically no possibility that anyone could track you using your IP address because you're not even using it. This should guarantee your safety anytime you're connected.

An Invisible Dog Fence Overview

An invisible dog fence offers a "fenceless" boundary to your home and yard. For those of us who do not have a fenced in yard, this is one of the best options to keep your pet inside the boundaries without the expense of putting a regular fence around your home.

There are two basic types of an invisible dog fence on the market. There is the wireless type of fence and the electric or underground type of pet fence. The biggest difference is how they are set up, and this article being a general overview, makes reference to both types.

Invisible Set

For the electric, also known as electronic, type of fencing, the way it functions is pretty simple. First, a wire is buried around the perimeter of the area you want contained. This wire transmits a radio signal to a lightweight collar that your pet wears. Your canine should be wearing the special collar whenever she is outside in the yard. One main point to emphasize is that your pet must be trained and trained properly for an invisible dog fence to do its job in a safe and effective way. When your canine gets close to the boundary set by the wires, the collar will emit a warning sound letting your pet know he is getting too close. If your pet is properly trained to use the system, he will often not go past this point. However, if the dog goes past the boundary line, the collar will emit a mild static correction to tell your pet that is too far. The correction is not harmful to your pet and should not be viewed as inhumane. It is similar to scooting across the carpet in socks and then touching your best friend.

The other type of invisible dog fence mentioned is the wireless type of dog fencing. These systems have a transmitter that can be located in any safe and dry location like a garage. Instead of wire being buried around the perimeter of your yard, when using a wireless fencing system, you really only need to plug it in and set the area of the boundary. These types of systems are very nice if you need portability with your fencing system. They can be taken with you wherever you go. The way the collar works with a wireless fence is very similar to the electronic type.

There are many people who do not believe that using these types of fencing systems is humane. As long as directions are followed and proper training procedures are implemented, an invisible dog fence offers a very safe and effective way to keep your pet contained. It is also a fraction of the cost of fencing in your entire yard. The collars that come with these types of systems are specially designed to have variable settings of correction. You should use the lowest possible setting that effectively gets the message to your canine. Smaller dogs require lower settings and there are even special models available for little pets.

An invisible dog fence is a great way to keep your pet safe and secure within the boundaries you set. With a little training, your canine will never go past the point of needing correction. Personally, with my pets, the minute they see the collar being put on, they are on their best behavior and enjoy the freedom they get from one of these great systems. If you are thinking one of these products may be right for your canine, please do the proper research and take the time to read about the proper training techniques.

Activate! The Energy Of The Invisible

Our world is physical and it might be quite controversial to argue against that, but it has been proven over time that the things which really control the physical are often not seen. Things which are now visible mostly start out as invisible, therefore leading us to make an early submission here that the invisible does control the visible. There is an adage that says "if you can see with your mind, you can seize anything; you can create anything if only you can imagine it". The human mind basically has two parts which are the conscious and the subconscious. While the conscious mind is limited in its access to resources more because it works with what is obvious and tangible, the subconscious is almost unlimited in the wide range of resources it can access as it has a far reach into our past, experiences, fears and innovations. Metaphorically it can be said to have a 'license to roam'. It is therefore quite necessary to create an alignment between both of them for maximum potential benefit.

You need to be careful as to the kind of the thoughts allowed to cross your mind as they help shape your subconscious mind which means taking charge of your thoughts and emotions. This would be of immense benefit as a lot of things are just not tangible or physical and the list is almost endless. Mentioning a few would include energy, vision, faith, dreams, intuition, desires, goals, aspirations, the soul, God, demons, angels, cherubs, devil, uniqueness, originality etc. There is a certain amount of energy that drives the mind to do the work of processing which eventually initiates a realization of these things earlier started in the invisible. The mind is limitless, all you need do is to constantly activate the energy without putting a limit on it. Our minds can go way beyond our wildest dreams if only we can get it out of the box we have created for it.

Invisible Set

Success begins from the mind which invariably means that it starts out from the invisible. Now, being able to transpose the concept from the realm of thought to reality is a process I refer to as 'chasing after the invisible' and this does require two very important points namely strategy and structure. The process would always involve crafting a strategy which if properly executed would yield exact results. When this is constantly done, it all begins to come together in the form of a structure which becomes readily available to execute the strategy anytime the need arises. Wishes do not make success materialize, but there is some work involved. A clear understanding of this would in effect catalyse the process and push it in the right direction. The opposite of which can be quite disastrous, unless the subject picks up valuable lessons from the unpleasant turn of events.

Energy is rightly defined as the ability to do work, and the reference 'work' in this scenario is the part where the strategy goes through the crafting process. One must also remember that building is a process and that being the fundamental in establishing a structure. In very explicit terms, the mind is really the part of us that sees, in effect the eyes are merely reflectors. Therefore with the mind's eye, we must be able to clearly envisage the start to finish, anticipating the finished product in the process. All of that must take place before the burden of making it into reality unfolds, providing a capable blueprint clear enough not only to build from but to leverage off sufficiently. This is the part where belief comes in, as the saying goes "The right kind of belief produces the right kind of resolve which in turn produces the right kind of results". In this whole arrangement the belief amounts to the driving factor which in essence is the energy required to drive the whole process of achievement.

To activate the energy of the invisible with reference to achieving your individual goals in the end, you must learn to give your mind the freedom of expression without limit by harbouring the belief that any and everything is possible, if only I could just set my mind on it. This process repeated over time trains your mind environment in to a well structured machine of execution quite prepared for eventualities from constant practice. Since we might well be able to agree now that the bulk of what makes up the tangible is not readily seen by the eyes, it is only wise for one to realize that a win situation is down to a successful transposition, and everything necessary to have that should be put in place. This means we must be able to muster the right kind of belief which generates the necessary levels of energy that can effectively run the whole process. Conclusively, the million dollar word here is 'Activate'.

Use Your Invisible Power - Create Your Wonderful Life Even With an Illness - It is Your Choice!

What kind of life do you want? However, what if you were born with an illness, such as Cystic Fibrosis?

Charley was such an individual. Charley was born with cystic fibrosis. It is a degenerative disease of the muscles. Many people in previous years did not live beyond their teenage years. Without your properly functioning muscles eventually you are not able to breath. Charley was very fortunate. He had many care givers including a wife who sacrificed and helped him through college, and graduate school. Charley became a civil engineer and helped plan structures for streets and buildings for better disabled access. Charley used his mind. Charley in his 30's was wheel chair bound. He could only use one hand for movement of a joy stick and a mouth piece on a computer. His speech was labored, but you could understand him. With help he went to work every day. Charley could see, hear, use a few fingers and think. Charley made an important contribution to our city. He also made those around him more aware of and appreciate their physical surroundings. He made our city more accessible for all.

Invisible Set

In the story of "Jack and Jill vs the World" from the Spiritual Circle Cinema, 2009. Jill is a 25 year old who has just arrived in New York City. She is full of life. Yes, she is living with her cystic fibrosis disease, but she does not let it control her life. She creates her life and appreciates everything in her life. She is happy! She meets a young man, Jack, and changes his life forever. She creates an atmosphere of a very full happy life which is quite different from his boring, and sad one with no meaningful relationships. She, however, does not reveal her illness and her previous treatment visits to the hospital to Jack. She does not want him to feel sorry for her. She wants her "healthy" relationship to be the focus not her illness. One day she has to tell him of her illness. He gets angry, but after a while he finally realizes that it is their relationship that matters. He realizes that he loves her. They do not know what the future will hold for them. They make a decision to be with each other and live their lives as fully as possible. They decide to have a happy and joyous life.

Charley's story is true. Jack and Jill's story is made up. If you have an illness you have a choice. How do you want to live your life? Use your mind and see yourself enjoying life and all its wonders. Create your happy life.

Use Your Invisible Power - Create Your Wonderful Life Even With an Illness - It is Your Choice!

Continue on your journey and have a happy and joy-filled life.

Invisible Conversations

The life we create exists in conversations, several conversations actually, some spoken, some written down, many unspoken, some remembered, most forgotten, yet all put together over time. The best way to achieve our goals and learn and grow as individuals is to first understand who we are and how the conversations we have influence what we do. I refer to these conversations as our invisible conversations.

Our invisible conversations entail our inner dialogue of judgments, evaluations, worries, and insecurities that we are having while we are interacting with others and which can keep us from being present or prevent us from achieving our goals. These are so powerful they can drive us to success or failure. They can impact who we are in a way that can propel us forward, bring us back, or completely stop us. They can make us dwell about the past or worry about the future.

Invisible Set

Your story is the mosaic, or interconnected elements, of all the conversations occurring throughout your life. We often forget that we have a choice in how we write this story. Some people live their lives without ever realizing what they truly care and love most about this world. One of the main reasons for this is that sometimes we aren't very good at understanding who we are. While we may be really good at what we do, we sometimes don't have a clue about how to control our thoughts. We can focus so much of our energy and attention on outside events that we can neglect understanding our inner self.

This book is a guide to understanding and becoming aware of the conversations that you have about yourself and others that stand in the way of your success. Once we begin to understand why we have them and how we can change them, we can start being in control of our thoughts and not have our thoughts control us.

The book Invisible Conversatons is divided into 7 distinct areas or subjects, which independently and together provide insight into the overall mosaic of invisible conversations, Each subject includes a set of practices or exercises to help you work on mastering that area. The practices are simple and easy to follow but require regular repetition plus, most importantly, a willingness to open your mind and heart to understanding more about who you are.

I suggest you begin to pay attention to what your invisible conversations are, the one you think but don't say and see if they are forwarding or stopping you?

Remember, believe in yourself and you will accomplish your dreams!

Invisible Conversations

Please visit my blog at http://unleashingYourMagic.com for more great information and ideas about this subject. I look forward to connecting with you and supporting you on your journey to great success. Thank you.

Drawbacks of an Invisible Pet Fence - When Your Wireless Dog Fence Doesn't Work As Planned

When it comes to keeping your dog safe in his own yard, there is no better way to do it than by installing a fence. Fences for dogs come in all different shapes and sizes, and in some instances, there is no fence at all. A popular option is what is commonly referred to as an invisible dog fence, or an underground pet containment system. Most underground dog fence systems use a small gauge wire buried around the perimeter of the yard. A receiver in the dog's collar shocks the dog when he gets too close to the perimeter. Hopefully, over time, the dog learns to stay away from the edge of his yard.

But there are some drawbacks to an invisible pet fence. While the goal of the wireless dog fence is to keep your dog inside your yard, it does nothing to keep other intruders out. Anything, or anyone, can wander onto your lawn. This includes wild animals, strangers, or other dogs. Your dog could be attacked by a stray in his own yard. Or neighborhood children could tease or harm your pet, which opens you up to a liability lawsuit if your dog bites them while defending himself.

Invisible Set

Another downside is replacing the dog collar batteries every three months. Over time this can cost a bit of cash. Some people put reminder messages into their calendar, while others get set up with a company to have the batteries automatically shipped to them on a scheduled basis. Unfortunately, sometimes the battery supplier forgets to send them, and you are left with a radio dog fence that has no active receiver. Another possibility is that you may not even know that the battery has died until you look outside and your best friend is gone.

Some dogs are highly sensitive to the dog shock collar. It can cause such fear and anxiety in your pet that they may not want to even go out in the yard. This can lead to accidents in the house and other undesirable behavior. It's been said that it can take a month or two for a dog to get used to the electric pet fence and dog training collars, but is it worth two months of cleaning up messes left by your dog?

It's been reported by the pet containment fence manufacturers that this product works on 90% of the dogs. But what if your dog is in that 10% category where it doesn't work? Some dogs just appear immune to the system. This may be due to their size, or the amount of fur on their necks. For others, if the temptation is too great, nothing is going to hold them back. Shock, or no shock, they're gone. Sometimes dog's don't realize they're blowing through the wireless electronic dog fence barrier and by then it's too late. This can lead to dogs getting trapped outside of their yards. They will not cross the zapper to get back in, and could end up running off.

When assessing your options for a dog fence, and a wireless electric dog fence in particular, just remember that smart dogs will figure it out, and sensitive dogs are wounded to their core. Hope that yours is somewhere in-between.

Is Your Small Business Invisible? 5 Social Media Points to Consider

Have you noticed how cluttered your social media world has become?

Many small businesses doing social media have thousands of Facebook friends, tens of thousands of Twitter followers, hundreds and hundreds of LinkedIn contacts. At some point it all just gets to be too much. Your friends drop off the radar. You just can't help it. And vice-versa. You and your business become invisible to them.

Invisible Set

So what does this mean for your small business or association that is using social media for marketing?

Do your social media marketing efforts become valueless?

Not at all.

See, what we do as humans is filter our world.

Just like we do in real life (IRL), where we have more stimulation than we can possibly absorb, the brain filters out the things that are extraneous or seemingly unimportant. Think about it this way. We drive ten thousands plus miles per year and hardly notice certain brands of cars. Until we own one. Then we see them everywhere. They were there the whole time but we filtered them out.

It is the same online. We "see", but don't allow into our consciousness, thousands of posts and messages by business and friends everyday but, because they aren't top-of-mind, we filter them out.

Until we don't. Then we see them again.

How do we make sure we aren't getting filtered out?

1) Reach out. Don't wait for others to reach out to you. Reach out to them. Earnestly, but not in a needy, look at me, kind of way. Show you care. Be interested in them first and they will be interested in you.

2) Give Gifts. Be Generous. Find a reason to praise or promote them. Share their posts. Retweet them. Do something nice for them and they will notice you, and often reciprocate. Don't keep score. Give.

3) Be ever present. If you are an inch deep but a mile wide in your social media marketing efforts you won't break through the clutter. Instead, concentrate your efforts so your contacts just can't miss you. Make it about them though, not you.

4) Speak to their world-view. If you know your target market backwards and forwards you can validate them by speaking to their point of view. Think Fox News. Conservatives notice them because Fox speaks to their world-view. Liberals love the Huffington Post's "story" or brand. It validates their world-view so they take notice.

5) Don't blend in by always agreeing. It has been said that 95% of people are followers. When you stand out you cause a ruckus. That is OK. Don't be disagreeable, but disagree if you disagree. Contrarian viewpoints are craved and get interaction.

Once you reignite a relationship, they will see you again.

Do Invisible Dog Fences Work?

Fences are primarily used to set boundaries to your property. Most animals use body fluids to mark their territory, humans use fences. Fences also act to keep something in or out of a certain area. Dog owners know the importance of fences all too well. Fences serve as an important tool when it comes to the protection to and from their pets.

In some areas that don't allow putting up fences, the only way to keep their dogs in line is by using invisible boundries. Invisible ones are used to train dogs and set a boundary to them by drawing an invisible line in their minds. Once used for a period of time, the dogs will remember that going too far is bad so they will keep from crossing that line.

Invisible Set

The system makes use of an underground boundary wires along with a dog collar. When the sensor on the collar gets in contact of the sensor of the boundary wires, it sends a shock through the collar which the dog will feel. The shocks are not painful, it is usually just enough to get the attention of your dog. When your dog is near the underground wire, the collar will make a beeping sound to alert your dog. Overtime these stimuli will train the dog not to go further than the boundary you have set.

One of the main problems of invisible dog fences is that other animals may enter the area. Sometimes these animals will come in contact of your dog, and if your pet is curious enough they will often chase those animals. If your dog is too focused on the stray animal and is not used to the invisible boundary system yet, chances are it will chase the stray animal beyond the limitations you have set. Of course this could only happen during the first few days or even weeks but by the time your dog has received enough shocks, it will respond to the warning sound.

The invisible dog fence is safe. The shock that the collar sends to your dog is far from lethal. Aside from keeping your dog inside your property, the it also serves as a training tool. Overtime the dog learns which areas are safe to approach and which ones are off limits. Of course, the invisible boundary works better if you reinforce it by training your pet regularly.

While some complain that their fences don't work for them, this should not be seen as a sign that the system does not work. There are several companies that develop this fencing system and although one brand might not work, others may be able to help. Before purchasing an invisible dog fence system, you should check whether the collar works properly. Make sure it produces a beeping sound several seconds before delivering a mild shock.

How to Apply Invisible Makeup in 10 Easy Steps

The whole idea with natural makeup is to achieve a radiant face that is prettier than what nature had provided. Rosier lips. Flushed cheeks. Perfect skin that is soft and smooth and radiant. Long lush lashes. Bigger eyes. The works.

That can be achieved with makeup. Only difference is how obvious do you want it to be that you are wearing makeup?

Invisible Set

Ideally, you should look prettier, yet look like you are not wearing any makeup at all. Is that possible?

Ironically, it takes the full slew of makeup to look like you aren't wearing any. You would need a makeup base, foundation, concealer, translucent loose powder, powder blusher, lipstick, eyeshadow, mascara, koh and a facial spray.

The result is as if you aren't wearing makeup, but you look so much prettier than you normally do when your skin is really makeup-free.

Makeup is all about enhancing your beauty, not detracting from it. Done right, skin looks radiant, eyes bigger and brighter and lips so much more kissable. Great makeup application does that for you.

Yes, you can go adventurous with dramatic eye makeup, or go for the gothic look, but hey, won't it be more fun to have them guessing whether you were born naturally gorgeous?

There a few tricks to note.

1) You choice of color
2) Blend, blend, blend
3) Mist and Set.

Ready?

Step 1
After cleansing, toning and moisturizing your face, dot on makeup base and blend it with finger tips over your entire face.

Step 2.
Get a foundation that matches your skin exactly. Test the color on your jawline. It should disappear completely.
Dot that foundation on your face and blend it in so it disappears into your skin.

Step 3.
Are any blemishes visible? Are your dark circles still obvious? If you really need more coverage, use a concealer that matches your skin. Dab on just enough with a brush onto the blemishes or dark circles and blend that in until the concealer vanishes completely.

Step 4.
Pick a blusher in a natural color -- the pink of your cheeks when you blush, or after a great workout. Or the golden glow you get on your cheekbones after a day out in the sun. Take a blusher brush and apply the blush on cheeks, forehead, chin and tip of your nose for all over radiance.

Step 5.
Choose an eyeshadow in a natural brown, peach or beige a shade or two darker than your natural skin tone. Apply that over your entire eyelid. Take another eyeshadow a few shades darker and apply into the crease of your eyelid to make eyes bigger. Take a large makeup brush and blend the eyeshadow on your eyelids so that no distinct lines between the different colors remain.

Step 6.
Dust the entire face with loose translucent powder to set the makeup so that it looks more natural.

Step 7.
Spritz face lightly with a facial mist to set the makeup.
Lay a kleenex over your face for a second.

Step 8.
Draw a fine line with kohl on the outer half of the upper lash line to make eyes look a little bigger. Smudge the line to soften it.

Step 9.
Apply a coat of mascara to open up the eyes and make lashes look lush and long.

Step 10.
Pick a lipstick that is the same color as the inside of your lip. Apply that with a lip brush. Blot the excess with kleenex.

Radon - The Invisible Killer

Radon is a colorless, tasteless, naturally occurring radioactive gas found in soil and rock that is a by-product of decaying uranium. You might be thinking, I've heard of uranium, don't they make bombs from that? Well, yes they do, but uranium occurs naturally in rocks all around the globe. Some areas have a natural propensity to have higher concentrations of uranium than others.

Why radon is dangerous

Invisible Set

We are all walking around with a bit of radiation in our bodies, and radon is by far the largest contributor to a person's overall amount of radiation they are carrying around. Breathing high doses of radon has been scientifically proven to cause lung cancer. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, radon could be the second most frequent cause of lung cancer, after cigarette smoking causing 21,000 lung cancer deaths per year in the United States. Radon-induced lung cancer ranks as the 6th leading cause of cancer deaths overall. Other forms of cancer may be related to radon exposure. Studies are underway to see if there exists a relationship between radon exposure and leukemia.

Where radon is

Remember radon gas is formed as a by-product of soil containing granite or shale (the two of which carry larger than average amounts of uranium). But we're talking very small amounts. On average, every square mile of surface soil, to a depth of 6 inches, contains only 1 gram of radium which is responsible for releasing radon into the atmosphere. Worldwide, the amount of radon varies greatly and is variable within a given region and even from room to room in a house.

Is radon in my home?

Radon exits the ground and can seep into your home through cracks and holes in the foundation. Radon gas can also contaminate well water. We know that radon concentrations are usually higher in areas near major fault lines so in Southern California we should be aware and take the proper precautions.

Knowing the characteristics of radon gas should help protect you and your family from exposure. First, radon gas being heavier than air tends to settle in low lying areas. With adequate ventilation, radon gas cannot become concentrated to a level to cause harm. On the other hand, in enclosed areas such as inside buildings, basements and crawl spaces, radon gas levels can become harmful. Second, if you smoke, stop! The effects of radon exposure in people that smoke is synergistic; i.e. the effect of smoking coupled with higher than average levels of radon exposure is greater than the sum of the two parts measured separately.

The EPA claims that 1 in 15 U.S. homes has radon levels above the recommended guideline. Their guideline of what is acceptable is roughly equivalent to receiving 200 chest x-rays over one's lifetime. Their current recommendation (and that of the US Surgeon General) is that all homes be monitored for radon levels.

How to test for radon

Home kits are available in most home centers but it is claimed that their results might not be reliable. A better option would be to hire a professional home inspector with experience in radon testing. Professional tests are reliable in determining if your home has areas in it where radon levels are above the threshold set forth by the EPA. The tests are non-invasive and begin by placing a measurement device near the floor on the lower level of the home. Additional tests may be recommended by the inspector if you have any granite surfaces in your home, like a kitchen countertop. Other than placing the collection devices where recommended, nothing is done. There are some specific instructions that you must follow regarding the testing site(s) like keeping the windows and doors shut as much as possible. Testing may have to be postponed if your area is experiencing high winds or a pending storm, or if humidity levels are high (all of which may adversely affect the test results).

The inspector will return in 2-7 days to collect the devices after which time they are sent to a lab for analysis. Results are usually available shortly thereafter.

How to remove radon

The EPA recommends you use mitigation (control) techniques to reduce indoor radon if levels in your home are above the recommended threshold. Mitigation methods include adding positive pressure ventilation in your home which effectively creates a pressure differential (higher pressure in your home, gas cannot flow in). Sealing all floor penetrations to help prevent the gas from seeping into your home from below is also a good idea. Be advised that ventilating your basement or crawl space IS NOT RECOMMENDED as some people suggest. This flawed mitigation technique practiced by many companies could have the adverse effect of bringing more radon gas in which naturally exists outside the footprint of your home's foundation.

Homebuyers: be sure to read this

If you are in the process of purchasing a home ask your Realtor to include a radon contingency in your offer to purchase. This clause states the maximum level of radon that is acceptable to you and your family. Afterwards, hire a company to survey the home for radon gas levels. Radon testing is offered by most professional home inspection companies so be sure to ask this question when interviewing home inspectors in your area. If radon levels are found to be above the levels set by you in your contingency, this clause will afford you the right to back out of the contract without penalty.

Facts to remember about radon gas

  • Just because your next door neighbor's house has tested high for radon gas does not mean your home is at risk.
  • Houses with basements are not at a higher risk for radon than houses without basements.
  • Radon levels vary region to region, and even from house to house on the same street.

The Invisible Battle - Overcoming Mental Abuse

Child abuse has come to the forefront lately, flooding our news with reports of violence, neglect and sexual abuse. Estimates range from three to nine million American children become victims each year. Yet some forms of abuse go undetected, and while not as extreme, can have lasting effect on a person's psyche.

Mental abuse is not as readily apparent as its counterparts, but it can leave deep, painful scars. In my third book, the main character, James, suffered from physical abuse and mild neglect, but emotional berating caused the most damage. Verbal attacks target a person's self esteem, eating away at their sense of worth and moral foundation. Constant belittling or being treated as inferior damages a child's image of themselves, and that portrait is carried over into adulthood. Young people crave love and acceptance and will seek it elsewhere if their needs are not being met at home. The fear of rejection can be traced back to rejection experienced as a child. Coldness and criticism can alter a child's perspective of relationships, and they may in turn treat others with the same chilly indifference.

Invisible Set

Like a debilitating disease, abuse can cripple one's ability to function in society. For some, the results of extensive mental abuse are devastating. They may react violently, resorting to anti-social behaviors, substance abuse, or mistreating their own children or spouses, thus perpetuating the problem. Inner stress and turmoil can manifest as a physical ailment or an anxiety disorder, the true cause of which may go undiscovered. Deep psychological scarring means some individuals will spend years trying to resolve their issues, occasionally at the expense of those around them.

More often, abuse causes less debilitating problems, filling the child with any number of inhibitions. As adults, they can become depressed or withdrawn, avoiding new situations for fear of failure. Negative and inconsistent behavior from a parent can result in misplaced suspicions and a lack of trust. Social skills can be lacking, causing difficulties with relationships and all forms of intimacy. James struggled with this problem, occasionally exhibiting unacceptable behavior. Some individuals may not be able to form an attachment with their spouse or children, keeping them emotionally distant. Others crave and seek acceptance, desperate to find the unconditional love they did not receive as a child. All of these situations eat away at an already depleted self-image and further destroy a person's confidence.

An emotionally troubled childhood does not automatically confine one to a life of misery, though. Many factors go into one's ability to overcome an abusive past. Certain characteristics affect one's resiliency, such as a good self-image, a high level of intelligence, a sense of humor, and optimism. A positive mental attitude may be the only thing a person can control that will affect his or her future success. Those with a strong sense of independence sometimes feel challenged to achieve a better, more rewarding existence. James funneled his anger into work and school, determined to excel at both endeavors. Possession of such attributes can be the difference between succumbing to the abuse or rising above it with purpose and meaning.

Sometimes resiliency is not enough and recovery requires outside assistance. To aid the healing process, it is crucial to find positive influences. Associating with a supportive circle of friends will begin to raise one's self esteem. A good reading program or support group can provide guidance and assurance, reinforcing a sense of worth and belief that life can be better. At one point, James attended anger management classes to better control his temper. As a result, he continued to struggle with frustration, but his outbursts were no longer so violent. The average person's perception of normal may be foreign to victims of abuse, and therapy or counseling may be necessary to readjust their belief system. Parental examples may have taught inappropriate responses to various situations and reinforced negative views of the world. Coping skills will need to be fine tuned so that they may properly handle unpleasant circumstances and discover what is normal, acceptable behavior.

Coming to terms with negative feelings is essential to dissolving the internal conflict and moving forward in life. Many discover guilt to be their greatest struggle and blame themselves for their childhood trauma. Others battle daily with their anger, fighting the urge to foist their agony onto someone else. Coping mechanisms may be in place to block the hurt, such as James's desire to place the needs of others before his own. All of these issues need to be dealt with in order to restore internal balance. Ultimately though, the pain and frustration at some point needs to be dispersed and released. While making amends with the abuser may be out of the question, forgiving them will dissolve one's own ill feelings and set them free. Reconciling oneself with the past, coupled with setting realistic goals, will focus anger and negative energy towards a more constructive purpose and begin the road to recovery.

No one has to remain a victim. The effects of mental abuse are far-reaching, but they do not have to be permanent. In the end, James overcame his struggle, as have many survivors, and broke the cycle of abuse. There is always hope that for those who can abandon the baggage of abuse, a life of fulfillment and contentment awaits.

Invisible Home Turn Offs

Ever wondered why some beautiful houses stay on sale for long periods of time even if the properties are in good neighbourhoods and the purchase prices are fairly reasonable? It could be because these homes do not meet the needs of all their potential buyers, or because the buyers are turned off by invisible factors.

Invisible turn offs are not ghosts and goblins. These are little seemingly insignificant things that home sellers are usually not aware of, but buyers are very sensitive to. Some of these invisible turn offs include:

Invisible Set

Undesirable Odours - since you live in the property, you may have gotten used to the smell of cigarettes, or mildew or pets and not consider this offensive. People who are not used to your home environment would notice this immediately, and they also know if you're trying to mask unpleasant odours with sprays.

Pets - Yes, they are real entities, but they can be considered an invisible factor to you since you are used to having them around. Pets should be removed from the premises, no matter how cute or affectionate they are, whenever you're showing your home off to buyers. They may bark, slobber or worse, relieve themselves unexpectedly, and any of these could be a big turn off for a buyer.

Bugs and Insects - Like pets, these are not invisible, but if you are used to their presence, again, they become invisible (to you). Buyers are on a look out for creepy crawlies, the worst of these are cockroaches, spiders and flies. You have to eradicate these little pests first, before you entertain guests.

If you want to get a good price on your home, and sell it at the soonest possible time, you have to be extra vigilant about these things. A house is more than having picture perfect interiors, solid structural foundations and a great curb appeal; it's also about these little seemingly insignificant factors.

Remember that when you're selling a house, everything matters.

Yikes! You're Invisible!

Remember when you were a kid and you imagined being invisible? I sure did. I wondered what it would be like walking down the street where nobody could see me and hiding from people who were trying to find me. It seemed like such a cool idea.

But in speaking with a client recently, he said the most valuable thing he got from our conversation was the realization that he was invisible, and that nobody was going to do business with him if that was the case.

Invisible Set

I want to suggest that for many of us, the fantasy of invisibility is already here. You are invisible!

Virtually nobody sees you, pays attention to you, thinks about you or responds to you (at least in a business context). And if people don't see you, they aren't thinking about you or doing business with you.

But why are we invisible?

All I can deduce is that we must want to be invisible. We want to hide and not be noticed. We don't want to be singled out for attention. After all, being invisible is much more comfortable than visibility.

When you're highly visible you can be ridiculed, rejected, challenged. Heck, that's no fun. But of course, if you're invisible you'll never go anywhere in your business. And that's not any fun either.

The very essence of marketing is high-visibility. And this goes for your brand of chiropractic marketing as well. You need to stand out as an expert, become slightly famous, put out your ideas for all to see. And the more visible you are, while putting out a message that conveys value, the more Patients you'll attract.

But what if you realize you need to be highly visible to be successful in your business, but you are highly uncomfortable doing so? This is an important realization to have. If you keep trying to be successful while remaining virtually invisible, you're deluding yourself.

Time to ask yourself some important questions:

1. Do I want to be highly successful? Is this important to me? Do I have a mission, a passion to make a contribution?

2. Is my desire to get my message out there stronger than my fear of being visible, my fear of being rejected?

3. What is the very worst that could happen if I committed to being highly visible in my marketplace? Would people hate me? Would I die?

4. What's one step I could take to be more visible than I am right now? Do I have the courage to take that step?

That's all it really takes. A reality check and a willingness to take one step at a time, even if it's a little uncomfortable. If you're not willing to take that step, and if you are more committed to your story of how hard marketing is, it's time to pack it in and find a job where you can be comfortably invisible.

You cannot totally dominate your marketplace being invisible. You must use multiple streams of visibility to build your business and to make your brand of chiropractic the brand of choice.

Billboards, screenings, seminars, outdoor media, radio, television/cable, health fairs, event sponsorships, police car sponsorship, clean highway sponsorships, hot air balloons, weekly newspaper column, weekly newspaper advertisement, branded apparel and this is just a few of the weapons you have to fight invisibility!

You cannot multiple ZEROs...in other words, you must invest in marketing if you want to sail to new heights. Which would be better:

1. Invest in mutual funds and get a 10% return, or

2. Invest in marketing and get 100%, 200% or more!?

For years the IRS has considered reclassifying marketing as a "capital" investment instead of an expense. In other words, they recognize, just as marketing gurus understand, that marketing creates an "asset" and should be depreciated over a period of time, instead of deducting the cost off the top!

Why? Well, the ad you run this week, will continue to impact the marketplace weeks and often months from now.

The good news is that marketing is still considered a direct expense and can be deducted 100% as incurred. Think about it: the IRS, your government, is helping you build your business. Example: You have ,000 in profit. You must pay the government your base rate of 38% or about ,000. Leaving you with ,000. But, if you invest the ,000 in marketing, you owe the IRS NOTHING! So, that added an additional ,000 to your marketing budget. Sure, you don't have the ,000 to spend on YOU, but, what would that ,000 marketing investment return to your bottom line? And, how much more will your business be worth, if you go one million dollar and beyond?

Five important steps to higher visibility:

* When talking about your brand of chiropractic, don't fall back on the tired old label or description of what you do. You'll get real attention if you talk about real problems that your Prospex are experiencing. Sounds simple, but it's easy to slip back into comfortable but ineffective descriptions.

* Write that "Core Issue Article" and get it into the hands of as many people as possible. I don't mean hundreds, but thousands. Put it on your Web site, mail it to anyone who's interested. Get it published.

* Be courageous enough to be unique, not a look-alike. That means finding a special marketing niche, offering something novel, or making a big promise that others aren't making. [Hint: The No-Wait 3 Minute Policy!]

* Tell the in-depth story of who you are, what you stand for, what you know, and what you can do. Don't hide your great accomplishments; let the world in on what is probably a well-kept secret. Even you have others in your marketplace that can make the same claim, the first one who does owns it!

* Get close to people. You can't be aloof and attract Patients. Get out there and network. Meet with people one-on-one. Set up joint marketing alliances. Create a referral program. Get involved with your community.

Get visibility, if you want to really build a business and not just grow a practice.

Yikes! You're Invisible!

The Invisible Worlds of Kumano

In this world of seemingly incessant 'TV War News,' bank failures, virus scares, vaccine panics, and political intrigues there are, thankfully, a few places in this world where one can still find quiet spaces and spiritually inspiring atmospheres where one is drawn to naturally reflect deeply on the meaning of life and death. Once such place is a region in Japan called Kumano and is the place where I presently call home.

Nestled in the mountains on the southern tip of the Kii Hanto peninsula, Kumano spreads from Tanabe in Wakayama Prefecture to Nagashima in Mie Prefecture to the east, and north to Totsukawa in Nara Prefecture.

Invisible Set

Though Kumano was designated a World Heritage Site in 2004, still too few people inside or outside Japan are aware of the natural refuge available to them in the region. Even fewer are aware of the deep mystical past, spiritual energy, and historical significance of the area.

Even the people who live in Kumano are only superficially aware of their rich past and cultural history. This has started to change slowly since the World Heritage designation and now the local residents of Kumano are beginning to take pride in their history and culture once again.

However, there is still a long way to go to awaken both Japanese and non-Japanese to the visible and invisible richness of the area. Perhaps this article will serve as one more beacon of light shining on Kumano that beckons seekers and nature lovers to venture here for re-invigoration and healing.

Personally, Kumano has long held a special attraction that is hard for me to explain in words. Like anything esoteric or mystical, words rarely suffice. In the end, you have to experience it for yourself and see it through your own eyes, understand it with the heart, and feel it with your own skin.

I have traveled extensively in Japan and have visited a lot of wonderful places all with their own unique atmosphere and value and I have many more places I want to visit like Izumo Taisha and northern Japan.

Yet, no matter what beautiful scenery, shrines, temples, and cities I have seen, and no matter how significant the cultural magnificence, I am always anxious to get back to the protective and healing atmosphere of Kumano where I have lived most of the last 22 years after first being drawn here in 1987 to practice Aikido with Hikitsuchi Michio, 10th degree black belt (recently deceased).

Each time, on my way back to Kumano, as I leave the urban world that is gathered along the 'Shinkansen Strip', and start to penetrate the mountains of the Kii Peninsula, I always have this feeling that I am entering a different world than the rest of Japan. It is like I am passing through an invisible gate into a world where the invisible powers take hold and don't let go.

Each time I return to Kumano it feels as if I am coming home and I immediately enter into a completely different state of mind leaving the worries of the material world behind. It is like a returning to the mother's womb, a place of warmth, protection, and safety where eternity and emptiness co-exist.

Although many parts of Japan are famous for their beauty and cultural treasures, Kumano is really more about the internal, the invisible, and mystical than the visible, worldly, and obviously splendid.

There is no glittering Kinkakuji here and no grand and exquisite carvings of the Buddha like the Daibutsu in Nara. Nor are the temples here perhaps as splendid as those in Kyoto, nor are there any Imperial Palaces.

The shrines and temples here in Kumano are beautiful and peaceful places. However, I see these human artifacts more as 'add-ons' decorating a far more stunning natural backdrop that no human hand could imitate.

One of these amazing power spots is Nachi Falls, the tallest waterfall in Japan at 133 meters.

Since Nachi Falls can been seen far out at sea, it is said that Ragyo Shonin, a Brahman from India, was likely attracted to the falls while passing by on the Black Current and was drawn in to explore the falls where he would eventually establish one of the Three Grand Shines of Kumano, Nachi Taisha, about 1700 years ago.

Certainly, everywhere you go in Kumano you will find pristine waterfalls, soothing hot springs, masculine mountains, lush forests, beautiful waterways, and white sandy beaches along the Pacific Ocean.

However, again, it is not just the breath-taking natural scenery that sets Kumano apart. You can find beautiful natural environments all over Japan once you are off the Shinkansen Line where modern urbanized Japanese have gathered for their convenience.

In Kumano there is something much more intangible that goes beyond the obvious tourist attractions and natural beauties of the region. Unlike, most tourist spots in Japan you will have to look deeper into yourself to find the value here.

They say when the student is ready the teacher will appear. However, your 'teacher' in Kumano may not always be a person in visible form. In Kumano, your teacher may be invisible and intangible. Lessons on the meaning of life are everywhere and can be found in a conversation, an experience, an event, a sunrise, or on the Kumano Kodo looking out over a sea of mist covered mountains.

Of course there are many human teachers here too.

I am reminded of one man on a personal mission who, for no fee, takes men and women who are suicidal or depressed all over Kumano with no plan, agenda, or destination. In free style three day sessions he takes them on walks in the mountains and by the sea. He shows them the natural wonders of the area while asking 'setsumon' or 'explanatory questions'.

Far into the wee hours of the morning the dividing, dissecting, and judgmental mind begins to tire as he guides his 'guests' through the dark places in their mind until they awaken to see the pure light of their inner child. Around 400 people each year partake in this inner child journey for only the cost of their own food. Most will never think of taking their own life again.

This is just one example of the kind of life changing experience that can happen naturally and spontaneously in Kumano when the student is ready.

Historically, many people were drawn to Kumano in their darkest hour of spiritual or physical sickness. Not surprisingly it is often in these darkest times and hopelessness that the 'teacher' in Kumano appears and where the old self dies and a new self born.

To quote from a web site I translated about Kumano:

It is when we are in despair, scared, or deep in sorrow that our thoughts wander to an existence beyond our little selves. In these moments we might try to reach into that unseen world in our silent calling or we might pray to be shown the path which reveals the essence of ourselves in the face of infinite existence. In the midst of the silence lie stone steps and stone walkways covered with moss and lined with statues of Buddhist deities carved in stone. Along these pathways we walk, thinking about the thousands of people who died along the way, having never arrived at their destination. On this ancient path, the path of birth and death, you can feel your past, present, and future as one.

Not all people are ready for the lessons Kumano has to offer. We all have our own timing and when we are ready our 'teacher' will appear. In Kumano that teacher may be invisible and intangible but you will know it when it touches you.

Invisible Force Field - Wireless Home Alarm Systems

Wireless home alarm systems have been a good choice in home alarm systems for many reasons. Wireless alarm systems are extremely easy to install, can usually be done by the home owner, and are less intricate than hard wired alarm systems. Wireless alarm systems were previously considered inferior to hard wire systems, but in the past few years have developed tremendously.

In a wireless system, sensors are placed around the home next to windows, doors, and any other form of entry. When the alarm is set, doors, windows and entrances must be closed properly. When the entrance is either open or closed, the circuit is broken, and the trigger is set off, causing the alarm sound. Some wireless alarms give you a 10 second warning before officially sounding the alarm, allowing you time to key in the code or deactivate through your cellular phone or remote entry. This feature is important because it allows the home owner to activate the alarm upon leaving the home, and gives them time to deactivate it upon reentry.

Invisible Set

Wireless security set up is a lot easier than hard wired alarm systems, because they are less extensive in wiring. This reason also makes wireless alarm installation a lot less expensive than hard wired systems. Wireless security systems are also easier to uninstall making wireless alarm an easy choice for new home owners or renters to keep their living quarters safe. Most landlords will not have a problem with allowing a wireless alarm to be set up for a tenant in their home, and more and more apartment complexes are setting up units to include wireless security systems in each apartment home.

The one drawback to wireless security systems is the possibility of radio frequency interference. Wireless security systems are run by radio signal, and if there is other unstable radio transmission equipment in the area, the wireless alarm has the possibility of going haywire, causing false alarms, costly city fines for responding to false alarms, and headaches for the homeowner. Companies who offer wireless alarms are becoming more diligent in the past few years of blocking radio frequency interferences, so wireless home alarms are definitely becoming a better and better choice.

Wireless home systems are a good option for renters who are looking for protection in their home or apartment without the permanence of hard wired systems, and businesses or homeowners who may not be in the same place for a long period of time. Wireless burglar systems are a good route to choose for a Do It Yourself (DIY) plan, while still offering the major benefits of protection.

Highly Sensitive People - Invisible Difference is Problematic

Invisible Difference

Psychologist Elaine Aron makes the point repeatedly that High Sensitivity is not a matter of having sharper vision, keener hearing or more tender skin than other people. There is nothing that can be weighed or measured on the outside of a person which will indicate to the observer that an individual is highly sensitive in Aron's terms. High sensitivity happens inside the brain. It is specifically a tendency to process sensory information in a more detailed way.

  • While more detailed processing leads to slightly slower decision making, it also creates
  • a heightened ability to identify small differences
  • a better memory... since we all have better memories for well processed information.
  • More careful and detailed processing of experience may also lead to more understanding of the implications of an event for the future, and more understanding of its effect on other aspects of the present.

HSP's Struggle to Adapt

Invisible Set

One might well ask, in the light of these advantages why it so often seems that the 15 to 20% of the population who are highly sensitive, struggle to adapt to a world that overwhelms them. Highly sensitive individuals are born as a minority into a cognitive and social world which is not set up to accommodate their natural way of being. To a highly sensitive person, the world will always move a little too fast for comfort. Other people's judgments are comparatively quick, rough and therefore "ready." Compared to the process of a HSP, the world which the rest of us live in might appear to be a world of generalities and approximations. Exceptions to rules and details which are evident when a situation is examined minutely are glossed over or ignored.

A Thought Experiment for Non-HSP's

If you are not an HSP, try this thought experiment in what it would be like to have more to process all the time...

Imagine the world with the volume turned up thirty percent. Thirty percent more cars on the road, moving thirty percent faster. The radio playing thirty percent louder all the time, feeling thirty percent more hungry at any given moment and having thirty percent more paperwork to process for any given task and thirty percent more housework or child-care to accomplish.

My figure of thirty percent is imaginary but if you ramp up the detail in your personal world you can easily see how it might quickly become exhausting and over-stimulating. Scale this experience down to a microscopic level but make it life-long and pervasive and you begin to have an idea what it is like to be an HSP living in our society.

High Sensitivity Compared to Left-Handedness

In a way, HSP's share a common problem with the approximately 10% of persons who are left-handed. The world is not set up to accommodate left-handers. Door handles are poorly placed, stairwells turn the wrong way, and tools have grips which are uncomfortable and unwieldy. Left-handers, as a result have a higher rate of minor injuries... not because they are awkward, imperfect or in any way inferior in their abilities, but simply because the world is set up the wrong way for them.

It is only in the last thirty years or so that it has been acceptable and considered normal, to be left-handed. Our grandparents were rapped on the knuckles and forced to train themselves against their nature to write in a right-handed copybook style. Left-handers were expected to agree that their choice of hand was incorrect and inferior. The fact that as "fake" right-handers they could never function as well, only lent psychological credence to their feeling of oddness and inadequacy. Educators today know that handedness is innate and left-handed children are no longer penalized or treated as inadequate or inferior and as a consequence they can grow up "proudly left-handed".

Highly sensitive people find themselves in a very similar situation. Since their difference is even less evident than choice of handedness, those closest to them are often unaware that there is an innate difference in the way that they approach the world. There is not usually, even in the most loving or supportive families, a conceptual vocabulary to imagine that such a difference might exist or that it might be a quality that is shared by a significant percentage of the human population. An HS child, is therefore, too often born into a childhood world that is not accommodating of their particular difference. They grow up feeling, like left-handers a hundred years ago, that they are slow, wrong and somehow always out of step with their non-HS peers.

Compared to an HSP, a left-hander stands out like a sore thumb. HSP is all but invisible, and as a human experience it is only beginning to be researched and understood. Where left-handers may be exposed to more accidental physical injuries, misunderstood HSP's are certainly exposed to social mis-attunement which can cause psychological and emotional injuries.

High Sensitivity and Psychotherapy

In the 1930's, psychologist Carl Jung was one of the first to consider the implications of high sensitivity. He noted that about 25% of his patients experienced emotional problems which were related to this quality.

It is easy to imagine that when a child is innately prone to process information deeply, to be sharply aware of details and differences and to create strong memories for well processed material, that they will experience many, many occasions when they are out of step with even the most loving family. Families which are under strain or chaotic for economic, health or interpersonal reasons will be naturally enough, even less receptive and supportive of "invisible" HSP difference and needs. HS children can then grow up feeling problematic, difficult, unappreciated and defective and often seek therapy for issues concerning low self-esteem.

Making the Invisible Visible

Work for HSP's in psychotherapy revolves around sorting out what aspects of their historical relationships were impacted by their sensitivity. Current negative self-assessments and self-judgments must be examined and debated in the light of the advantages and strengths of sensitivity. Realistic strategies can be elaborated to create a life that takes into account the tendency to become over-stimulated.

There are many satisfying ways to lead a human life and highly sensitive individuals are uniquely able to appreciate the subtle changes which can make a noticeable difference in their existence. The first step, however, is to make the invisible forces and assumptions visible through reflection and conversation.

Psychotherapy is often a very good place to do this. The slow pace and supportive environment creates a situation where their detailed attention to concrete and emotional experiences is an integral part of the therapeutic process and many HSP's deeply enjoy and benefit from the opportunity to apply their finest abilities constructively to their self-understanding and personal growth.
